Many of them say they believe their neighborhood is being threatened by a proposed development. Perez Developers are seeking a zoning change for the 13-acre site where the old Holy Cross School once stood.
Perez APC is proposing two seven-story residential and retail buildings that will consist of about 280 apartments. The administrative building that is currently on the site would be turned into an office building.
In order for that to happen, a zoning change is needed.
Currently, the neighborhood is zoned for only a four-story building but would need to be re-zoned for buildings 75 feet in height.
Several residents in the neighborhood are opposed to what they’re calling high-density, high-rise buildings in a historic district with mostly single-family homes. Many also say it would block their view of the river. Proponents of the plan say progress in the Lower 9th Ward is very much needed.
The City Planning Commission heard more than three hours of comments on both sides of the issue. In the end, they were unable to come up with a legal majority vote.
The issue will now go before the City Council.
